Society cannot solve this problem by telling everyone to “learn to code” or “get more experience.” If entry-level work disappears faster than people can gain experience, the traditional career ladder breaks.
The likely future is a combination of several things:
- AI will eliminate some entry-level tasks, but not all entry-level jobs. Companies still need people who can deal with customers, physical environments, unpredictable situations, relationships, accountability, and work that AI cannot reliably perform.
- The definition of “entry level” will change. Instead of being paid primarily to perform routine tasks, new workers may be expected to supervise AI, verify its output, manage workflows, sell, communicate, and handle exceptions.
- Governments may have to intervene more. If productivity rises dramatically while demand for human labor falls, policies such as stronger unemployment insurance, wage subsidies, expanded earned-income credits, public employment, shorter workweeks, or eventually some form of basic income become much more plausible.
- Education will have to change. A four-year degree followed by “apply to 200 entry-level jobs” is a fragile model if employers increasingly expect applicants to arrive already productive with AI tools.
- People will increasingly create income from multiple sources. A conventional full-time job may become only one component of someone's economic life: contract work, small businesses, freelancing, investments, government benefits, and other income streams could become more common.
- New jobs will also emerge. Every major technological transition destroys some occupations while creating others. The difficult part isn't whether new work will exist; it's whether enough new work will appear quickly enough, and whether ordinary people can realistically transition into it.
The deeper issue is this:
If AI eventually becomes capable of doing most economically valuable work better and cheaper than humans, then “everyone needs a job” can no longer be the foundation of economic security.
At that point, we have a distribution problem, not a productivity problem.
Imagine AI makes a company capable of producing twice as much with half as many employees. That's fantastic for the company's productive capacity. But if millions of people lose wages while the benefits flow primarily to the owners of the AI, the economy has a serious problem: who has the purchasing power to buy all that additional production?
That's why I wouldn't frame the future as “AI takes all the jobs, so everyone is doomed.”
I'd frame it as:
AI could make humanity enormously richer while simultaneously making the old relationship between work and survival obsolete.
The big political and economic question of the next few decades may therefore be:
How do we distribute the enormous productivity gains from AI widely enough that people can live well even when human labor is less economically necessary?
If we solve that, AI could mean less work and a higher standard of living.
If we don't, we could have the bizarre situation of being technologically richer than any generation before us while millions of people struggle to afford basic necessities because their labor is no longer needed.
And that's the part people often miss: the scary question isn't “What happens when AI can do our jobs?” It's “Who owns the AI, and who receives the economic gains from what it produces?”
