What Is the Monroe Doctrine in Simple Terms

The Monroe Doctrine was a policy announced by U.S. President James Monroe in 1823. In simple terms, it said:

  1. Europe should not interfere in the Americas – Countries in Europe shouldn’t try to colonize or control countries in North or South America.

  2. The Americas are off-limits to new European colonies – Any attempt to take over land in the Western Hemisphere would be seen as a threat to the United States.

  3. The U.S. would stay out of European affairs – While warning Europe to stay away, the U.S. promised not to interfere in European wars or politics.

“Europe, stay out of the Americas, and we’ll stay out of your business.” It was meant to protect the newly independent countries in Latin America and assert U.S. influence in the Western Hemisphere.
