What causes mesothelioma?
The primary cause is asbestos exposure, typically in workplaces like shipyards, construction, factories, or homes with asbestos-containing materials. In about 70%–80% of cases, individuals have a history of asbestos exposure. In rare cases, secondhand exposure or genetic factors (like BAP1 gene mutations) may also contribute.
What is the survival rate for mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma has a poor prognosis. The average five-year survival rate in the U.S. is around 8%–12%. Survival depends on factors like cancer type, stage, and how early it's diagnosed. For pleural mesothelioma, average survival ranges from about 12 to 21 months; peritoneal mesothelioma treated with HIPEC may live around 53 months; pericardial cases have much shorter expectancy.
What is mesothelioma?
Answer: Mesothelioma is a rare, aggressive cancer that forms in the lining of internal organs—most often the lungs (pleura), but also the abdomen (peritoneum), heart (pericardium), or testicles. It's almost exclusively caused by exposure to asbestos and often appears decades after exposure.
