How to Use Figure Ground

How is figure ground?

This is the relationship between the background or ground  and subject or object that people are viewing. The correct definition of figure ground perception is or refers to the tendency of a visual composite system to make a scene that people are looking at and all other things in the background seem formed.

The way that people can separate figure and ground is through tonal contrast. For example if you are looking at a portrait with a cluttered background there is no obvious wall behind it or distinct border between the subject and the man.

Foreground Figure

A foreground figure is when people look at something and are able to separate out a figure, background, ground, and foreground.

This is usually the main subject that will usually be focused on while the background does not have as much attention shown to it.

The areas that stand out are probably more likely to be seen as compared to the foreground figure
